In 2002, California Senate Bill 1078 established the Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS) requiring all investor-owned utilities to increase their sale of electricity produced by renewable energy sources to 20% by 2010.
We support increasing our use of renewable energy because it will foster reduced greenhouse gas emissions, job creation, energy security, and cleaner air.
Southern California Edison’s (SCE) Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project (TRTP) is the first major transmission project (approximately $1.8 billion) in California constructed specifically to access multiple renewable energy generators in a remote, renewable-rich resource area. Extending from eastern Kern County to the City of Ontario in San Bernardino County, the project traverses portions of the Antelope Valley, San Gabriel Valley, and the western Inland Empire.
Currently only 700 megawatts of wind energy are being generated, but once the project is complete, the line could carry more than 4,500 megawatts. SCE hopes to start construction by 2009 and complete the project by 2013.
